Mask Up Project 2021

Coronavirus disease (COVID–19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered virus. Most people infected with the COVID–19 virus experience moderate to serious respiratory illness. Older people and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer most likely develop serious illnesses. Hence, the best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well-informed about the COVID–19 virus and how it spreads.

Protect yourself and others from the infection by washing your hands with soap under running water, using alcohol-based sanitizers frequently, and not touching your face.

De Pull up Foundation with its project dubbed “mask up” was initiated to sensitize the public about the danger and severity of the pandemic. Statistics show in Ghana that, there are over 91,000 cases recorded by far with 88,763 recovered cases and about 756 deaths. This data was gathered as of April 5, 2021.

It is however disheartening to realize that a lot of caution has been thrown to the wind. Little or no attention is paid to the safety protocols prescribed by our leaders and the Ghana Health Service.

Some people have resorted to living their lives as though nothing was at stake. No social distancing, no washing of hands, no wearing of nose masks among others.

Peradventure, their posture to the pandemic is due to financial constraints. Perhaps, they cannot afford nose masks, sanitizers, or rubbing alcohol no matter how cheap the aforementioned products could be.

For this reason, De Pull Up Foundation stood in the gap on April 5, 2021, to provide some items needed for protection against the coronavirus with a target on the poor and less privileged in society.

We visited some streets and marketplaces of Accra namely; Graphic Road, Kotobabi, Pig Farm, Kanda, Nima, and Mallam Atta markets respectively. During the visit, we gave out two thousand (2000) containers of hand sanitizers, rubbing alcohol, and liquid soap, thousand two hundred (1,200) pieces of branded nose masks, and a thousand (1000) pieces of face shields. JN Products, producers of silky-style cosmetic products, proudly sponsored the hand sanitizers.

Concurrently, details of some street children were picked for our Empovoc programme to be rolled out later this year. The purpose of EnpoVoc is to provide short-term training for interested persons living on the streets to learn some skills that will earn them a career, which will eventually help them vacate the streets. Some of the courses to be covered are cosmetology, fashion; make-up artistry, and many more.

Coronavirus is not over yet. Nevertheless, with a collective effort, we can push it behind us and it will soon be a thing of the past. So wherever you find yourself, in addition to washing of hands with soap and water and the use of hand sanitizers, also, do remember to “mask up”.

Special thanks to JN products for helping us make this event a reality, all this was possible because of their support.
